For PLC hardware, drives, HMIs, power supplies and industrial communications equipment, a family name is rarely enough. A unit may look identical to another module in the same range while carrying different firmware support, voltage ratings, memory capacity, connector types or communication interfaces. Sourcing by the complete manufacturer part number reduces that uncertainty before an order is placed.

A part number turns a broad request into a purchasing requirement. “Allen-Bradley I/O card” could describe hundreds of products. A complete reference, including any suffixes, identifies the particular module required for that rack, cable set and control architecture.
